Randolf The Red Wriggler Needs You!

March 8, 2014

Our friends at Reynolds Secondary are working on an amazing gardening project and could use your support!  They are entered in the BC Green Games, a province-wide competition for students in Kindergarten to Grade 12, designed to motivate action, enable sharing and reward and celebrate the green efforts of schools throughout BC.

The Reynolds Red Wriggler Ranch will help compost food waste produced at the school, provide nutrient-rich worm castings for their beautiful and productive courtyard garden, as well as equip the local community with red wriggler worms for their own worm bins.  In the words of one Reynolds student, “After working with the Victoria Compost Education Centre we found out that many people contact them looking for Red Wrigglers for worm composting but that there are very few places to get them locally. We thought to ourselves that this could be a service we could offer the community, as well as use funds raised to help us fund our other Green Projects such as our ongoing courtyard garden.”

The Reynolds courtyard garden is an incredible space that is well worth supporting.  “It’s not used just for gardening or for “learning”, but for poetry slams, arts classes, chutney-making workshops, after-school garden parties, and pot lucks. It’s a place where all students feel a bit of ownership. [It has] 6 raised beds that fuel students through the School Salad Bar program, and also a range of native fruit shrubs, from blueberry to lingenberry.” (Source:  schoolgardennetwork.ca)

The BC Green Games competition awards its winners $1000 of grant money to fund their unique projects, and it only takes simple click from you to help the Reynolds team earn one of the 10 prizes available for secondary schools! The voting closes at the end of March so don’t hesitate, it only takes a minute to support this fantastic opportunity for kids in your own community.
