Annual August Plant Sale + 30th Birthday Party

The Compost Education Centre (CEC) is hosting our 11th Annual August Plant Sale! This event features local farmers offering a wide variety of organically grown annual overwintering vegetables and perennials to keep you eating through the winter. And to celebrate our 30th birthday as an organization we’ll also have live music, cake, artisan vendors, an e-bike raffle, a bean counting contest, and more!

The plant sale will take place for the first time in Haegert Park one block from our site on North Park street. Bring blanket or a picnic so you can enjoy the music under the giant Sequoia tree. Entry by donation or free for CEC members. Dogs welcome.

There will also be a Parent-Child workshop ‘Composting 101’ taking place during the sale, so bring the whole family and learn about composting while you’re here!

Resource for National Pollinator Week

This week we are highlighting How to continue in the climate apocalypse with bugs and flowers, a zine by CEC staff member Zoe-Blue Coates. This project highlights the importance of insects in our community and their ability to be our greatest allies in the face of climate emergency.

Charlie’s Dirt Day Read Along

January 12, 2022

This month we’d also like to share a read along of Charlie’s Dirt Day by Andrew Larson, with illustrations by Jacqueline Huson-Verrelli. This is one of our favourite compost-related kids’s books here at the CEC, for younger primary school aged children. It’s about a boy who discovers that compost can help him grow fruits and vegetables in containers on his balcony! This book is suitable for children ages 3-7.

Hugelkultur!

On the rainiest of rainy days, a few brave souls got together to build a sweet raised bed out of rotting wood, green garden waste and compost.  Hugelkultur is German for “hill culture” and it’s a great way to use rotting wood’s capacity to store water to your advantage.  The quick and dirty: lay rotting logs in a line, add brush material on top, then a layer of nitrogen-rich green materials, then soil, then compost, then soil, then plant!  Of course there’s more to it than that, check out our Site Manager’s more detailed blog post about it here.  Huge thanks to Vic High’s garden club who provided the site for this little hugel demo and who helped with the build!

Compost Ad Challenge: snap, enter, win

Get ready to see the see the Compost Education Centre’s message rolling by you soon! Our message of composting and conservation will be advertised on the side of BC Transit buses in Victoria during the month of May. To celebrate our mobile messaging, we’re running a photo contest. Keep you eyes peeled (heh heh) for our ad on a bus when you’re walking, cycling, or driving by and then (carefully) take a photo or a selfie with the location and bus number and submit it to us. Each entry will be entered into a draw to win a $100 Whole Foods gift card.

What on Earth? Stories Rooted in Land and Nature, Nov 4th, 7:30-9:30

Join the Victoria Storytellers’ Guild for an evening of stories rooted in land and nature.

You are welcome to come to listen or can also bring a story of your own to share. Stories can be of different lengths up to 10 minutes or so. Shorter stories are welcome, too. They can be folk tales, fairy tales, myths, legends, personal stores (happened to the teller or someone close to them), can have some singing or response from the audience. They must be told “by heart”, that is, not read from text or with the use of notes.

Admission by donation at the door, with all proceeds going to support the Compost Education Centre’s programming. Tea and cookies will be provided

When:  7:30 pm to 9:30 pm, Friday, November 4th

Where:  1831 Fern St., the Quakers’ Meeting Hall.

Fall Organic Plant Sale on Saturday August 27th!

Our annual August Organic Plant Sale is coming up on Saturday Aug 27th, 10am-2pm at the Compost Education Centre, 1216 North Park St!

The sale is a great chance to get local, organic veggie starts for winter growing! Come on out to the little sister of our spring organic plant sale and get your greens for the winter. Kale, broccoli, cabbage, salad greens, culinary herbs, medicinal herbs and much, much more will be available.
