New cold frame in our teaching garden
July 22, 2015
Emily, our lovely and talented intern, decided to take on building a cold frame as a summer project. We were excited to repurpose an unused section of our teaching garden and to be able to extend our already generous growing season.
Emily started with a cinderblock bed that was not in use, deciding to use it as a base for the cold frame. She calculated the size of the cold frame so it would fit exactly out of one sheet of plywood. We cut it to size and test fit it, then Emily went to work staining the outside (for the sake of beauty) and painting the inside white (to reflect light). She also made frames for the top with wood and scavenged greenhouse plastic and attached them with hinges. The new cold frame is a big, awesome space for growing and we are excited to test it out — thanks Emily!
