Compost Education Centre Teaching Gardens
A hub for building resilient communities.
For over 32 years, the Compost Education Centre (CEC) has managed teaching gardens, learning resource center, and natural building classroom at 1216 North Park St in Victoria, BC. This space is a hub for building resilient communities. WE maintain a publicly-accessible demonstration site that features eight composting systems, rainwater cisterns and barrels, native plant rain garden, edible horizontal gardens, fruit trees, medicinal plants, a food forest, a solar powered aquaponics system, annual garden beds, a greenhouse, solar food dehydrators, and much more! The site is open four days a week all year round for people to visit.

Take a Site Tour
We offer guided tours of the CEC’s teaching gardens for all ages. Participants will gain an in-depth understanding of the many ecological gardening techniques and processes at work. Topics covered include attracting pollinators, permaculture guilds and food forests, organic vegetable growing, soil stewardship and rainwater harvesting.

Farm Stand at the Compost Education Centre
The CEC farm stand sells seedlings, fruits, vegetables, and flowers grown in our teaching gardens and improves community access to whole and nutritious foods reduced food waste. You can find the farm stand outside our front gate at 1216 North Park St. It is open Wednesday to Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm. Individual item prices are listed on a whiteboard. You can purchase items from the by paying with cash outside in a small cashbox or with debit, visa, cash, or cheque inside the CEC’s office.
Volunteer with us
Our teaching gardens require a great deal of hands-on care, and provide fantastic opportunities for an active educational experience with CEC staff. Some of the learning opportunities include perennial plant division and propagation, winter and summer fruit tree pruning, seedling care, soil amending, composting, trellising, thinning, harvesting, and weeding.
