Boulevard gardens create healthy and diverse ecosystems, beautify urban streets, and improve local food security. A boulevard is the grassy strip between a property and the street that is owned by a municipality. Most boulevards are between the sidewalk and street and often feature grass and boulevard trees. Gardening on boulevards is a fantastic way to increase local biodiversity and create community. Boulevard gardens are easy to begin, with just a few easy steps.

The CEC creates and maintains a boulevard garden network in collaboration with the City of Victoria through the Growing in the City Volunteer Coordinator Grant. The City of Victoria’s Boulevard Gardening Guidelines outline how residents can establish boulevard gardens. The CEC facilitates the creation of two boulevard gardens a year through:

• Connecting property owners or renters with viable boulevards and volunteers interested in gardening
• Providing education and expertise to support the creation and maintenance of boulevard gardens
• Maintaining a hotline service (250-386-WORM) to respond to inquiries regarding boulevard gardens.
