Healing City Soils 2023 Application

Background

If you grow food in your backyard, community garden, or boulevard garden, or would like to begin doing so, and you live in the Greater Victoria Area, free soil testing may be available to you. Soil testing will assess whether there are heavy metals present in your soil, as well as look at other indicators of soil health. The results will be included on an online map available to the public, but exact locations are obscured to preserve participants’ privacy.

To apply

Fill out the form below to apply. Not every applicant will be chosen for testing as we are limited to working with 100 sites in total. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us. Applications will be accepted until March 31st, 2023.

Sampling will take place during daylight hours on Tuesdays from March to May 2023 conducted by a team of students from Royal Roads University. You do not need to be present during the sampling. Two to three samples will be collected per site (which should not take more than one hour). You will need to flag the specific area you would like to have tested and communicate any relevant information about your site with students prior to sampling (e.g. keep gate closed, dog in yard, etc). You will receive your soil test results by November of 2023, if not earlier. Follow up information sessions are provided at no cost to participants in the fall of 2023.

*Please leave the dandelions that grow around the areas you would like tested, as we will use samples in our lab analysis.*
